When you think about travelling alone for the first time in a long time, it’s normal to feel a bit apprehensive, and if you’re dealing with the pain of having lost your partner, it can feel absolutely terrifying. So what can you do to make things easier, to feel safe?
Common sense
In the end its about keeping your wits about you, trusting your instincts, using common sense…just as you do at home. You can do it! If someone asks if you are travelling alone, you might like to give the impression that you’re with others. If someone asks if they can come home with you, you might laugh and say that your husband would love to meet them! It’s great to carry a sense of humour and, I believe, it’s a good to trust in the kindness of strangers.
Practical Tips Video
Here are some practical tips that might help:
Once that’s all out of the way, it’s a case of… how are you going to have fun. What excites you, what interests you, what d’you feel passionate about, what might you like to do that you’ve never done before? It may be that you just don’t know what interests you anymore, you’ve lost your zest for living…in which case look back at your life, at what you used to enjoy that maybe you dropped because other things seemed more important, or something you always wanted to do but never had time for. There’s so much out there: history, culture, art, food, wine, walking, cycling, mountain climbing…mud wrestling, fishing, snorkelling, swimming with turtles, whale watching…dancing…. And maybe you just want some time in nature to rest and rejuvenate? Whatever it is, go with whatever feeds your soul! It’s time for you.
In the end, believe in yourself, be courageous, try new things, talk to types of people you’ve never met before. Travel boosts your self confidence…and doing so many things for the first time can be liberating!
