It’s not just about what you pack, packing smart is about how much you pack.
Everyone packs differently, some people like to travel light with one carry-on bag, others like to take lots. I say don’t fret about it… just remember you will have to carry it! Of course, you will want to bear in mind temperature variations, different activities AND your luggage allowance
Shoes and clothes
Personally, I think its important to think carefully about shoes. We women often take too many…you do want to be comfortable. I generally take a pair of flip flops, trainers or walking shoes, and a pair of smart shoes or boots. That’s all.
In terms of clothes, you’ll want to think about day clothes and evening, casual and smart if you need them, perhaps consider mixing and matching, possibly one colour palette so that everything works easily. Its ok to recycle when you’re travelling!
Consider local sensitivities
It’s good to consider how to respect local customs, so research cultural differences and sensitivities. In Vanuatu, officially a Christian republic that prides itself on it’s Melanesian kastom (tradition,) for example, women dress quite conservatively. Mammas wear ‘aelan dres’, a shapeless “Mother Hubbard” floral print frock with big pockets. If you find yourself invited to meet the village chief, you might want to wear a dress that covers your knees and shoulders!
Paperwork, bank cards, valuables, phone charger:
Of course you will carry your own attitude, values, beliefs, and often encounter different ways. In Europe, for example, topless sunbathing, drinking on the beach, mad double parking can be a shock to some Aussies and Kiwi’s. Different ways, all part of the experience, its good to be open-minded!
